[ Larry lets out a little hum of understanding. ]

[ He flicks his eyes to the bartop, unsure of how to feel about the...praise? Is it praise? ]

Ah, yeah...I'm not cut out to be a vampire.

[ Another hum, a thoughtful one. ]

Sometimes you've got to just take the hand you've been given, though. Maybe you can make being a vampire into something better than what you've known.

[toothaches]

[ Maurice stares into his drink for a moment before looking up with a small smile. He lifts a hand and flexes his claws. ]

These do make guitar easier.

[ He pauses, thinking of his next question: ]

So what did you do before you came here? Like, on a general basis. Work or school or whatever.

[toothaches]

I was shadowing a mechanic in Texas.

[ He taps a claw on the bar top, not for any real reason. A fidget. ]

For about two years, then all the vampire stuff happened and now I'm here.

Oh, a handyman, huh? You see many opportunities to fix things, here?

[toothaches]

I've only just started lookin'. It doesn't look like they have machines like I'm used to here, but they use a lot of steam, so that's somethin. I can learn.

Yeah, that sounds like a place to start. It'll be good to have someone among us who can fix things.

[toothaches]

[ This gets a bashful grin out of Maurice. Feeling needed is...nice! ]

I mostly work on cars and tractors, but I know my way around a cow farm. I don't think they'd let me milk cows here. I've got cold hands.

[ He chuckles. ]

You mean the cows wouldn't.

[toothaches]

[ His grin widens when Larry appreciates his joke. ]

They sure wouldn't! And I've had enough cows mad at me lately. So I'll stick to machines.

I wonder if their tech is advanced enough they actually have machines for that job.

[toothaches]

I don't know...there's donkeys and carts, but also we got these phones that are better than anything in 2008. It's like something off Star Trek.

[ The stuff here looked better than Star Trek to Larry, but he doesn't say so—he'd never watched much of that show. ]

WHen I'm from—1980—phones are things wired into the wall that you dial and talk to someone on. That's the only thing they can do.

[toothaches]

[ Maurice's eyes widen and his face lights up like Christmas. ]

Hoh--oh, oh shit okay, Larry, I gotta tell you about Ghostbusters!

[ Bemused and amused, Larry turns slightly on his barstool, intrigued. ]

Sure, shoot.

[toothaches]

[ He stalls only long enough to sip down the last of his drink. ]

Okay, so this movie is gonna come out in 1984 and it's so good. It's got Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver in it, and it's about these guys who use this super tech to suck up ghosts!

[ Larry hums out a little chuckle, but it's a rueful one. Back in his version of 1980 those two actors are probably dead. ]

So what happens?

[toothaches]

Well they start busting ghosts and everyone's like yeah man, the Ghostbusters rule! But then these guys try and get 'em shut down and--so what they do with the ghosts, they put 'em in this big tank thing? So when the badguys shut off all their stuff, all the ghosts escape!

Oh, man. So there's ghosts all over the place again?

[toothaches]

Yeah! And another thing, they were busting at this place that had a bunch of ghosts, this apartment building with ghosts, he finds out by another guy that this cult built the apartments in such a way that it's like a beacon to this god called Gozer who's going to end the world and then she SHOWS UP and--well I don't wanna give away the ending...

Nah, man, give away the ending, I'll never see it.

[toothaches]

Oh, okay--!

[ He trips up for a second because Larry is right. This is...forever, isn't it? ]

Uh...uh, the--Gozer is like, chose the form of your destructor! And the Ghostbusters are like ah shit what's something we can beat and one guy thinks of this marshmallow mascot--he's like the Pillsbury Dougboy. And then this giant marshmallow man the size of Godzilla appears in the city and starts wrecking shit.

[ Larry laughs. ]
